The Leaf Thief by Alice Hemming
A squirrel’s leaves keep disappearing. He enlists the help of his friend bird to find them. Bird patiently (and sometimes not so patiently) explains that the no one is stealing squirrels leaves, the wind is moving them away. This is a silly one and best read with lots of voices!
Ox-Cart Man by Donald Hill
A classic story about a man who brings all of the wonderful things his family has made over the winter into town to sell. He then uses the money to buy more supplies and some gifts for his family to use. A great story of what hard work can produce, using what you have and simpler times.
Leaves by David Ezra Stein
A young bear experiences his first autumn and tries to place the leaves back on the trees before he hibernates for the winter. He wakes from his long nap to find Spring has sprung and the trees have regrown all of their leaves.
Bella’s Fall Coat by Lynn Plourde
Bella absolutely loves the coat that her grandmother made her, but it is getting too small. Grandma tries to get Bella to let her make her a new one, but Bella spends most of the story escaping off to explore the beautiful Fall world outside. Eventually, Bella’s coat tears and her grandmother is up all night making a new one. The next day, Bella is ecstatic with her new coat and gets to use her old one to cloth her snowman after the first snowfall.
Stellaluna by Janell Cannon
As a baby bat, Stellaluna is knocked from her home and into a birds nest. She adopts some of their habits until the end of the book when she finds her mother again. This one is popular for a reason!
B is for Boo by Greg Paprocki
There are so many variations of the Alphabet Books in this series. We have a few and love them all. Such a great way to explore new vocabulary and practice the alphabet in a fun way.
Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson
A witch on her broom cannot seem to keep her belongs from falling down. Each time she goes in search of what she has lost, she meets a new animal friend who decides to join her on her journey. Eventually, she is chased by a dragon and saved by all her new friends. The movie is also very cute and perfect for a Movie Night a after reading the book.
The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat by Stan and Jan Berenstain
Brother and Sister Bear are allowed to go Trick or Treating by themselves this year. They plan to go everywhere except their neighbor Old Miz McGrizz who they fear is a witch. When they end up at her house anyway, the bears learn not everything is always as it seems.
Spider and the Fly retold by Tony DiTerlizzi
This is a retelling of the poem originally by Mary Howitt all about a fly ending up in a spider’s trap. At first glance, I never would have expected this one to be a hit but it is requested constantly.
